Martin Nodell has passed from the scene. Who?
To those of us of the Comic Book Geek persuasion, he created one of the icons of the Golden Age of Comics, Green Lantern. But not the Green Lantern or Lanterns most of us grew up with. Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart (no, not the one who hosts The Daily Show), the Green Lantern Corps and even G'nort all came after Martin Nodell left the world of comics. Mr. Nodell created the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott.
Alan Scott was a civil engineer who discovered a magical green lantern in the debris of a train wreck. When he touched the lantern he heard a voice tell him how to create a ring and use the lantern. Donning a red and green costume and the name Green Lantern (who'da thunk it?) he fought crime alongside the Justice Society of America during World War II long before the JLA came into being.
After creating the Green Lantern character and drawing the comic for 7 years under the name Matt Dellon, Nodell left comics and in the 1960's helped create the iconic Pillsbury Doughboy.
Nodell died at age 91 in a nursing home in Muskego, WI on Saturday.
Martin Nodell... Requiescat In Pace. You will be missed.
