I've now seen this on the Intertubes twice, once from Slashdot and once from Kotaku, so I'm, unfortunately, prepared to accept that some dumb-ass idiots from a bible-thumping, God-fearing, extreme right-wing Christian group are going to announce that purchasing a Nintendo Wii for your child is a perfect way to introduce them to the world of pornography...
WTF?
The reasoning behind this asinine assumption is the fact that Nintendo is preparing to release a version of the web browser Opera for the Wii. What's that? A web browser for a game machine? Yes, the Wii, like all the new "third generation" gaming machines (read PS3 and Xbox 360), contains a wireless card and can be connected directly to your home's always-on Internet connection.
Just like that computer in the office and your child's room!
And obviously this will bring a thundering rush of fully naked content to your child that they couldn't otherwise find elsewhere, be it that computer you own, the local book store, or slipped between their best friend's bed mattresses. Which brings us to the quandary the lead Ranter has for this so called "web resource". (Click the link for the site!)
What has happened to Parental Responsibility in this country and do you even care that too many parents don't give a rat's ass what their children are listening to, watching, or surfing for?
Sure, I guess the Wii could be used as a device to allow kids to access inappropriate materials from the Internets. Sure, I also guess that your child could walk into any public library and pick up a copy of Grey's Anatomy (the reference book, not the TV show) and see drawings that could be seen as inappropriate. But if they do, who's responsible for allowing that?
As I see it... Its the parents! Its the parents who should be watching what their kids are playing on the Wii. Its the parents who should be responsible for what content their kids are downloading from the Internet. Its the parents who should be responsible for knowing what kind of friends their children are hanging out with.. and dating... and driving with... and... and ... and...
We have become a country of lazy people who want nothing better to find someone to blame for our ills and this group of lazy Christians are part of that problem and not part of the solution.
Oh.. and the Wii, like computers, has Parental Controls that allow adults in the household to block this type of unwanted material, but the founder of group, Mike Foster, makes a statement that proves just how lazy US parents are...
Which takes us back to that thundering rush of content that will inevitably show up in front of your child's little eyes. Its probably not going to happen unless they go looking for it. Or sign up for it. Or give out their email address to anyone who asks... And then we're back to that Parental responsibility issue.
The Wii as a pr0n portal? Give me a break!

"parents don't see a need for them (the Parental Controls) because they are unaware of the porn capabilities."Parents are unaware? Once again, how do you live in this day and time and not even consider the possibilities that an Internet connected device would reach this kind of materials?

Anyway - Sorry to go on and on - but I am sure that you have dealt with this stereotyping crap with whatever line of thinking you ascribe to yourself. It's total crap!
I personally think that the Wii is an amazing product and more power to them for adding innovating features like a web browser. I will cover my own bases, to protect my kids if I think it's a problem - rather than start pointing fingers like a dummy.
We must be wrong on this issue because we both agree on it. The parents have to be responsible. It is more likely that the child will be exposed to porn from the home computer than the Wii. Who is looking at this game machine as a way to surf the net. I am sure some will use it to play the games against others and to download free game demos but why would they be surfing the net with it. Use the Parental Codes and take some parental responsibility. As a parent it is my job to protect my child.
I am also curious why they are picking out the Wii instead of going after all the game machines.
