Another Wednesday, another recap of Season 3 LOST episodes, and this one is only one day after. There's a lot to the episode and a much more detailed listing is here at Lostpedia. My recap now showing though? Episode 3.08... Flashes Before Your Eyes. (or, A Penny for your Thoughts...)
----------==========+==========----------
Desmond's freaky episode starts out with him looking for Hurley and Charlie and finding them ransacking Sawyers stash of food, meds, girly mags, and fine scotch whiskey. He has them follow him into the jungle where Locke and Sayid are glumly waiting to tell them about Eko's fate. Charlie asks what happened and Locke says to act normal since they don't want to panic the other losties. Des acts as though he's got a gnat swarming him and suddenly takes off through the jungle back to the beach with Locke and the others following as fast as they can. Des starts throwing clothes off and heads into the surf when Charlie realizes that someone is out in the waves. Desmond flips the body over to reveal Claire as the victim of an undertow that carried her out too far. He brings her back to shore and starts working to get her breathing. Charlie asks Hurley how he knew that Claire was drowning and Hurley responds, "That guy can see the future, Dude!"
Charlie makes plans to get Desmond to tell him how he knew about Claire by digging out the MacCutcheon Scotch that Sawyer was storing. Desmond refuses to drink until Charlie shows him the bottle and the party begins. Later in the evening, Charlie finally asks Desmond how he knew about Claire and Des just walks away until Charlie calls him a coward. Desmond takes offense, tackles Charlie to the ground trying to strangle him, and then he remembers.....
The Swan hatch is about to explode as the magnetic field grows unstable. Desmond says, "I love you Penny," trips the fail-safe with the key, his world turns white, and his life flashes before his eyes....
When he wakes up he appears to be covered in blood on a floor. The "blood" turns out to be red paint and he's fallen off a ladder while helping Penelope Widmore repaint his flat that have started to live in. Penny asks if he's OK and he realizes that he's reliving the past and that he as another chance with her. The next day, Desmond is getting his tie ready when he notices the clock reads 1:08. Then Penny comes over to help with his tie and he hears a familiar beeping coming from the microwave. Discussing his impending meeting with Penny's dad, she tells him that if the interview doesn't go well, its not the end of the world which disturbs Desmond but he shrugs it off as deja vu.
At the Widmore offices, Desmond checks in as a delivery man hands over a parcel for 815 which again brings a look of distress to his face when the numbers flash though his mind. In the Mr. Widmore's office, they discuss his resume, his job working for the Royal Shakespeare company, his lack of a degree due to an accident with his father, and that he has no military experience. He looks around and first notices a painting with polar bears, a Buddha and the word "Namaste" then he notices a sailboat model which Widmore explains is there due to an around-the-world sailing race he is sponsoring. This flashes memories of the boat he got from Libby as he is offered a position in administration. He stops the conversation and states that the only reason he is there is to ask his permission to marry Penny. Widmore says that its a noble gesture and takes down a bottle of MacCutcheon Scotch from his bar with two glasses. He only pours one glass though and says that one drink is worth more than Desmond would make in an month. It would be a shame for Penny to marry him since he will never be a great man and if he's not worthy to drink his whiskey, how could he be worthy to marry his daughter.
Desmond leaves the building and stumbles into Charlie who is playing "Wonderwall" on the street outside for change. Des claims to know Charlie from somewhere (memory flash to the hatch) and says the he remembers the whole scene and how it started to rain... just as it starts to pour.
Desmond seeks out his friend Donovan who is a physicist and asks him about time travel. He explains his memory flashes and that he's reliving his life. Donovan tells him that he's just in shock over what happened with Widmore and that if he's really lived this before, he should be able to tell what's going to happen. He says it doesn't work that way when the jukebox starts playing "Make Your Own Kind of Music" which jogs his memory of how the soccer game on the TV ends and the fight that starts at the bar. The game plays out but not as Desmond foretold and Donovan tells him to move on and just marry Penny.
Desmond returns home, tells Penny about the job and she suggests going out to celebrate the fact that she loves him. He asks why she does... "Your a good man and in my experience, they are hard to come by."
Desmond goes to a jeweler to get a ring but tells the woman behind the counter that he's, "not a man of means." Ms. Hawking says she has a ring that won't blind a queen but still has the sparkle of life and shows him a nice engagement band. She refuses to sell it to him though since he isn't supposed to take the ring since he never did the first time and that is what caused him to end up on the island turning the fail-safe key. Without him doing those things, every single one of them is dead. They go outside where she buys some chestnuts and points to a man wearing red shoes. As they talk about whether or not he will every marry Penny, a scaffolding falls, killing the man in the red shoes. He asks why she didn't save him if she knew it would happen. She replies that it was his fate and that if you change fate, the universe has a way of "course-correcting" itself and finding another way to bring you back to the path. Desmond leaves her, taking the ring anyway.
On his way to meet Penny, Des passes a Royal Scots recruiting poster. When he meets her near Westminster bridge, a photographer asks to take their picture. Finding a fake background Penny likes of an island harbor, Desmond poses for the fated picture he has held onto for years. After the photo is done, Penny pays and Des realizes what his fate must be and tells Penny he won't marry her. She runs off crying as he throws the ring into the River Thames.
Desmond goes back to the bar and orders cheap Scotch even though they have MacCutcheon. As he's talking to the bartender, he hears "Make Your Own Kind of Music" again and looks up to see the soccer game being played that he predicted before. It plays out as he predicted as Jimmy Lennon comes into the bar in a rage. As he starts to attack the bartender, Des yells for him to duck and is himself struck by the cricket bat.....
He wakes up in the jungle... Naked... and confused. He runs to find the hole left by the hatch implosion and find among the debris, the picture of Penny and himself.
Back in real time, Desmond is still choking Charlie when Hurley tries to pull him off. Desmond starts crying but then apologies when Charlie calls him a good man. He tells them that when the hatch exploded his life flashed before his eyes and he woke up in the jungle but the flashes have never stopped since. Charlie asks if that is how he saved Claire. He responds that he only saved Charlie and he's done it twice. Once from the lightning and once from drowning when Charlie went out to save Claire and even though he's done it, the universe will eventually "course-correct" itself. Not matter what, Charlie is going to die!
