The Lost LOST Recaps... Episode 3.05.

Continuing my late recaps of Season 3 LOST episodes, I present Episode 3.0... The Cost of Living (or, Ekkkoooooo... Eko.. Eko.. Eko..)

----------==========+==========----------

Eko take center stage this time in a tale describing his rise and fall as a priest in Nigeria. The flashback section shows his life with brother Yemi as young children. On the run, alone, and hungry, Eko steals food for them, get caught and is forced to confess. He refuses insisting that he did not sin since he only did it for his starving brother. Later as an adult and after Yemi's death, Edo has taken on the role of priest and is confronted by armed men who insist on knowing why their demands of vaccine for "protection" has not been paid. Eko refuses to pay up and the leader of the men shoots a helpless blind woman to spite him. The vaccine was really there and Eko cooks up a plan to sell it on the black market before leaving to take Yemi's place on a trip to London.

The plan goes awry and Eko ends up having to defend himself against the militia men and kills all three. He walks out of the church bloody and angry scaring the villagers. When he later gets ready to leave, a young boy asks if it is true what is mother says about him being a bad man. He replies, "Only God knows." A helper stops him in the road outside the church and tells him to repent his sins, make peace with God, and that he owes Yemi a church.

Back on the Hydra island, Jack is shown how they deal with death when Ben shows up with a white smock for him and takes him out to Colleen's funeral. Back in the medical room, Ben discusses the tumor with Jack and insists Juliet leave after she brings him a hamburger to eat. He tells Jack that it has to be more than coincidence that he fell out of the sky since he has the tumor. "And if that's not proof of God, I don't know what is."

After he's back in the underwater room, Juliet shows up with some entertainment. A copy of the movie, To Kill a Mockingbird. She loads the tape even though Jack says he doesn't want to watch and starts talking to him about how important it is that the do the surgery on Ben but the video only has the audio from the movie. The video is footage of her holding cue cards with information that Jack needs to know. There are people in The Others that do not agree with Ben's methods and that Jack can fix the issue by "accidentally" killing Ben during the surgery. Its a difficult procedure anyway and nobody would suspect that he intentionally killed Ben and that she will protect him from harm. She has him pretend to get angry and stop the movie. She leaves with the television and asks him to think about what she said.

Back with the lostaways, Eko is having dreams of Yemi burning down his tent which then comes true. Eko decides he has to find his brother's body back at the plane crash and heads off while Locke, Desmond, and Sayid head into the jungle with Nikki and Paulo to find the Pearl station so they can talk to The Others. Desmond notes that it is odd that the plane Eko is searching for is at the same place as the Pearl hatch. "Do not mistake coincidence for fate."

Eko is next seen staggering through the jungle and the black smoke monster is following him. He falls and the monster looms over his body and then leaves as Locke's band comes along. They help him up and on their way to the Pearl, Locke asks if Eko is looking for Yemi but gets no answer. Once at the hatch and plane Locke admits to looking into the monster and seeing a bright white light. Eko says that not what he saw. Searching the plane the find Yemi's body is gone but he finds an old photo of them as boys and get the crucifix that Locke found in the jungle.

The other members climb down into the Pearl and start looking around. Nikki gets some of the monitors working and suggests that they try to get pictures of the other stations. Once scene comes up and suddenly a man with a eye patch appears, puts his hand over the camera, and the screen goes to fuzz. Locke responds, "I guess he'll be expecting us."

Back up top, Eko sees Yemi who asks for his confession. Eko asks for forgiveness saying, "I have only done what I needed to do to survive." Eko kneels before Yemi saying that he didn't ask for this life but he did his best with it. Yemi asks him why he thinks he is his brother to which Eko replies, "Who are you?" Yemi simply turns away and walks into the jungle. Eko follows asking the same question again when the Smoke Moster appears before him. Eko recites the 23rd Psalm as a smoke hand reaches out, grabs him, tosses him against a tree, picks him back up and slams him into the ground multiple times. Locke and the others hear the sounds and come up to find Eko lifeless. Locke holds Eko as he dies and whispers in his ear. Sayid asks what he said and Locke states, "He said we're next."
