The Lost LOST Recaps... Episode 3.04.

Continuing my late recaps of Season 3 LOST episodes, I present Episode 3.04... Every Man for Himself (or, Escape from Alcatraz)

----------==========+==========----------

Sawyer in prison times two is the theme of this episode. As the episode begins Jack is playing both ends against the middle with The Others by getting Juliet to question who's really in control on the island. Are choices made by the group or does Ben enforce his will. The question is pretty much moot when Ben comes in and demands Juliet come to work on Colleen.

In real time, Sawyer and Kate are in opposing cells on the Hydra Island and see Colleen being brought in. In the confusion he hatches a plan to escape by getting some close enough to be electrocuted by the fish biscuit machine. Later, Ben comes out to talk to them and asks Sawyer his age and weight to which Sawyer lies at first and then admits 35 and 180 lbs. Ben comes close enough to the cage for Sawyer to grab him and hold him in a puddle of water. He hits the fish biscuit button over and over but nothing happens. Ben admits that they turned the power off and then proceeds to beat the living daylights out of Sawyer with a rubber baton.

Back at the lostaway camp, Desmond tells Claire that she needs to move further down the beach so he can repair her roof. She refuses saying that it looks fine to her while Charlie says that he can fix it himself. After a while he runs into Paulo and borrows a golf club from him and uses it to construct a large tower of metal and tells Hurley that its an experiment and to give it a moment. It starts to rain buckets and Claire's roof collapses drenching Aaron and freaking her and Charlie out. Seconds later a lightning bold strikes the tower instead of Claire's broken hut leaving everyone wondering what is up with Desmond.

In the Flashback, Sawyer is now in prison after being conned by Cassidy, the woman he tried to con in Season 2. He meets a weasily little man named Munson who supposedly stole 10 million dollars from the government. Sawyer befriends him in an attempt to con the money out of the guy but ends up turning the money over to the feds. Why? He finds out that he has a daughter, Clementine, with Cassidy and works a deal for his freedom and a trust fund for the child.

Back on the island(?), Sawyer is strapped to a table when he wakes up. Two guys are with Ben while he discusses the fact that they are blind and the comm's are down with Tom (Mr. Friendly). The two men tell Sawyer to bite down on a stick to ease the pain and then he stabs Sawyer in the heart with a long needle he's been filling with liquid. Sawyer wakes again to find Ben and Tom in a cage with a rabbit in it. Ben starts shaking the cage until the hare falls over apparently dead. Ben explains about a pacemaker that was put into the rabbit just like the one the put in Sawyer and that if his heart rate ever goes over 140 he will die likethe rabbit. A watch is used to allow Sawyer to monitor his heart rate and will go off if it goes over 125 bpm. He also says that if anyone finds out, Kate will have the same thing done. When he's brought back to the cages, Tom gives Kate some new clothes and has her change in the open. Sawyer's heart rate skyrockets and the watch goes off causing Kate to ask what's going on. Sawyer's only response is to douse himself in cold water.

Jack on the other hand is still in the underwater room. Juliet tells him about Colleen and asks him to help. He's masked and taken to the other building with alarms blaring so he can't hear Kate or Sawyer. Here he runs into Ben who objects to his presence while Jack notices an obvious X-Ray lit up on the wall. Juliet asks Ben if he wants Colleen to die forcing him to relent. Jack goes into Doctor mode but cannot save Colleen when her heart stops and they do not have any batteries for the defibrillator. Colleen's husband leaves in a rage and storms the cell holding Sawyer who allows himself to be beat to a bloody pulp as Kate begs for mercy. Only when she admits that she loves Sawyer does the beating end. Back in the operating room, Jack has been cuffed to the gurney with Colleen on purpose. Juliet shows up and tells him that she was a fertility doctor and has never seen death like that. Jack tells her that there was nothing they could do and she asks if that makes him feel any better. He mentions the X-Ray on the wall and says that the tumor on the 40 year old's spine could be removed if they only knew of a spinal surgeon.

After the beating, Kate is determined to get away. She has figured out that she can climb the bars and slip between them to get out. She climbs down to the outside and runs for Sawyer to free him. He refuses to leave and tells Kate to run. She refuses and climbs back into the cage telling him, "Live together, die alone." Later on, Sawyer is awaken by Ben who takes him for a walk to one of the high points on the island. Sawyer's heart monitor goes off from the climb and asks if they brought him here to kill him. Ben pulls a rabbit just like the one he "killed" and tells Sawyer that he lied. There is no pacemaker and he wanted to show him the he cannot escape from his cell since he has nowhere to go. They are on a different island from the other lostaways and that he did this to break Sawyer. The only reason he broke was when Kate was threatened.
