Who was Shirley Walker?

Another great in the movie business has passed from the scene. Shirley Walker died Wednesday from a brain aneurism at the age of 61.

So, you may be wondering, "Who was Shirley Walker?"

You may not know her by name but your kids may know her as the composer of music for Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, and The New Batman Adventures. You may know her from her scores for Escape from L.A., Willard, and the Final Destination Films as well as her extensive work with Danny Elfman who composes everything that Tim Burton put to film.

I know her from her work on one of the GREATEST Scifi shows ever. She scored the woefully underrated and wonderfully scripted Space: Above and Beyond. (May FOX someday fall to dust over their treatment of excellent Science Fiction shows like this.) The opening theme is one of my favorite themes and once upon a time I had the full 7 minute version of it that expands into a full fledged orchestration. Ever since Space:AAB I realized that she, like Elfman working with Burton and John Williams working with Stephen Spielburg, worked a lot with Dean Morgan and James Wong. These two brought The X-Files its most memorable series years before moving on to Space and then movies like The One and Final Destination 1 and 3.

Shirley Walker... Requiescat In Pace. You will be missed.

Aint It Cool News has more on her passing.

How sad to here that Shirley Walker passed away. I agree with your conclusion that Space: Above and Beyond was one of the best Sci Fi shows ever. Shirley's music added to the strong plot and acting.
