1863 -- General Ulysses S. Grant marches toward Vicksburg after winning victory at the Battle of Raymond, Mississippi.

1865 -- The last land battle of the U.S. Civil War occurs at Palmito Ranch, Texas. The Confederate Army won.

1926 -- The Airship Norge became the first vessel to fly over the North Pole.

1928 -- Mussolini ends women's rights in Italy.

1935 -- Alcoholics Anonymous is founded in Akron, OH by two men. One a stockbroker, the other a heart surgeon.

1940 -- The Nazis begin the conquest of France.

1780 -- Americans suffer their worst defeat of the Revolutionary War at Charleston, SC.

1938 -- The Adventures of Robin Hood debuts staring Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, and Olivia De Havilland.

1957 -- AJ Foyt wins his first major race in Kansas City, Missouri.

1932 -- Goofy, aka Dippy Dawg, appeared for the first time in Mickey's Revue by Walt Disney.

1936 -- The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 15-3.

1966 -- Busch Stadium open in St. Louis. Cardinals beat Braves 4-3 in 12 innings.

1977 -- First Quadraphonic concert in London by Pink Floyd.

1982 -- USFL is formed.

1993 -- Cheers & Knots Landing go off the air.

1968 -- Sunday, May 12 is Mother Day and, in a rather surprising twist, in Springfield, Missouri at St. John's Hospital, by God's grace, I was borne into the world 38 years ago today.
