Or... The bigger they are, the harder they fall.
Sometimes I can still be amazed by politics. As posted here before, it seems that no matter who is in power in this country, they still continue to do things that eventually bring both the individual and the related party down as the citizens of this country realize they have been duped.
This time its Rep. Tom DeLay. You know him as the former House Majority Leader that rose to power in the 90's. Now, as stated before, I'm usually not REALLY surprised by politics in this country but the news headlines yesterday were different. Mr. DeLay is not going to run for office this year. That in itself seemed to be a shocker being that DeLay claimed many times that he was not going to leave the race for any reason. But he also announced that he would be leaving Congress immediately! Wow! But what was the biggest shock of the entire announcement came in the form of a clear accusation that all of this was due to dirty partisan politics by those "Liberal Democrats".
Why such the shock by this announcement? Well... Let's see. The phrase sounds kinda familiar. Hmmmm.... Where have I heard something similar? Ummm.... Oh, yeah. Hillary! That most hated of all WOMEN DEMOCRATS. That vile, evil "stand-by-your-man" first lady that was derided and slammed hardest when she said a, "vast, right-wing, conspiracy" was out to get her husband, the President of the United States. Me thinks someone lied on their Resume to get the job of speech writer for Mr. DeLay! (Great, now he has fodder for a conspiracy accusation!)
What is it that DeLay doesn't get? He says that this decision was made not because he couldn't win his seat, but that the Dems were going to fight dirty! Yeah, just like he did when he strong armed fellow Republicans into voting for his pet project and when some didn't, he had their bills shot down. Just like when the Republicans accused a former US soldier, running for congress in Alabama, who lost both arms and legs in Vietnam, of being a deserter and enemy sympathizer. Just like they accused John McCain during the 2000 election of having illegitimate multi-racial children when the truth was him and his wife adopted the kids.
Could the fact that he's dropping out be the fact that his poll number are dropping in his district almost as fast as President Bush's? Could that possibly be related to his ties to Jack Abramhoff and Indian casinos? Could this be tied to his Indictment on money laundering charges by passing money to other Republican candidate illegally through the RNC? Could this be tied to his insistence that the state of Texas return his gun permit, even though state law says that he has to give it up due to the Indictment? Could it possibly??? Nah! Not according to DeLay! It's all those "Liberal Democrats".
Amazing!
What is even worse is that Tom DeLay is probably now planning his next move. Where? Over to "K" street to become a lobbyist where he will possibly cause more damage than he ever did in Congress. Here he is out of the public spotlight and he gets to try to influence policy in the shadows, where a sneaky man like him is probably more at easy anyway.
Oh.. and that term "Liberal"? That's the subject of another post soon. The ruining of a perfectly good word by twisting the meaning. I might even look at the problem with the word "conservative" too!
